The Lusitano is one of the world’s oldest and most graceful horse breeds, known for its calm strength, elegance,

Originally from Portugal, it has been deeply intertwined with the country`s history and culture and continues to inspire people around the world – bridging tradition and modern life.

ANCIENT ORIGINS
The Lusitano is one of the oldest saddle horse breeds in the world, with roots tracing back over 2,000 years to the Iberian Peninsula. Its name derives from "Lusitania," the Roman name for what is now Portugal.

HORSE OF KINGS
Lusitanos were the preferred mounts of Portuguese royalty and nobility, especially during the Age of Discovery. They were used in ceremonial parades, royal processions, and as gifts to other European courts - symbolising elegance, power, and prestige.

ELEGANCE AND INTELLIGENCE
Lusitanos are known for their calm, intelligent, and willing nature. They are highly trainable, emotionally attuned to humans, and thrive in partnership. Their compact build with powerful hindquarters, flexible arched neck and expressive eyes contribute to their naturally regal appearance and fluid movements.

THE MYTH OF THE DIVINE HORSE
In ancient Iberian mythology, it was believed that mares could be impregnated by the wind, creating a divine breed of horses. This mystical belief added to the spiritual aura surrounding the ancestors of the Lusitano. Such legends elevated this horse beyond a companion or tool, transforming it into a symbol of nature’s power, freedom, and mystery.

DISTINCTIVE BLOODLINES
There are four main foundation bloodlines (Andrade, Veiga, Alter Real, and Coudelaria Nacional), each exhibiting slightly different traits. During the 20th century, political unrest and war threatened the breed’s survival. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated breeders, the Lusitano was not only saved but has bounced back to excel in Olympic-level dressage performances, working equitation, and other areas - proving that a heritage breed can rival modern sport horses.

CULTURAL AMBASSADOR
The Lusitano has been officially recognised as a national cultural symbol, and the breed serves as a living ambassador of Portuguese identity, appearing in festivals, historical reenactments, art, and state events. The Associação Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro-Sangue Lusitano (APSL), founded in 1989, is the official national body dedicated to preserving and promoting the purebred Lusitano horse.

Translates as the “Free Spirit of Portugal”.
